For most tradies, a stolen toolbox or a damaged generator costs more than the price of replacing it. It can mean lost days on the job while you sort out new gear. Tools and equipment insurance (sometimes called general property or portable equipment cover) is designed to help protect the tools, equipment and materials you take from site to site.

Policies differ in where your tools are covered (on site, in a locked vehicle, at home or in storage), whether theft from an unattended ute is included, how individual items are limited, and whether claims are settled on a new-for-old or indemnity basis. As your broker, we compare the wording as well as the price, so you know what you’re getting before you need it.

We arrange tools cover for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, glaziers, tilers, boilermakers, refrigeration and air conditioning technicians, insulation installers and many other trades across Australia.

Frequently asked questions

What does tools insurance cover?

Tools and equipment insurance is generally designed to cover theft, loss or accidental damage to the portable tools and equipment you use for work. What’s included, and where, depends on the policy. We’ll explain the key conditions before you choose.

Some policies cover theft from a locked vehicle, often with conditions such as signs of forced entry or items being out of sight. Others limit or exclude it. It’s one of the most important things to check, and we look at it for you.

Many policies apply a limit to any single item unless it’s listed separately. If you have expensive items, such as laser levels, testing equipment or a generator, it’s worth specifying them.

Public liability is designed to respond to claims from others for injury or property damage. It generally doesn’t cover your own tools, so tools cover is usually arranged separately or as part of a trade package.

Yes, many tradies combine tools cover with public liability and other covers in one package. We can look at both options for you.
